In Stephen's Humanities class we have just started a project called The 20% project. The 20% project is giving us a unique opportunity to combine our passion and 20% of our school year (6 weeks), to create a project that will hopefully help someone in our local/global communities. When the project was first assigned I wanted to start a non-profit organization that raises awareness across different the reservations. I wanted this organization to bring awareness to a plethora of issues (drug/alcohol abuse, mental abuse, sexual abuse, environmental issues, etc.) However I changed my mind and instead joined my classmate Lilah in her project. Lilah and I have decided to join forces and create a project that focuses on Nature Deficiency with future and current generations. Nature Deficiency is where people are lacking in getting some quality outdoor time. We hope to change this, so we have decided to bring awareness by creating an inspirational and informational documentary. In addition to the documentary we want to plan a three day camping trip for the Juniors of next year (sophomores this year) during orientation. Student centered learning and audience centered learning go hand in hand. Student centered learning focuses on the needs, inspirations, and backgrounds of students to give them the best fit type of learning experience. Whereas, audience centered learning is reading your audience and knowing what to present to them. In order to do that though you need to be able to know yourself as a student and to know that you’re confident enough to present your passion in an understanding way to your audience. That’s what student and audience centered learning means in my opinion. I want to be able to present this project in a way that is meaningful and beneficial, not only to me but to others in the local/global communities.
